Up the coast from Hurghada, El Gouna feels less like a resort than a small, deliberate town that happens to float. The developer dug a network of saltwater lagoons through the desert and threaded them with islands and footbridges, so getting anywhere often means a short walk over water or a hop in a little boat-taxi. The mood is polished and design-conscious, the architecture a warm, sand-coloured riff on Nubian and Mediterranean lines. It is walkable, moneyed, and unhurried — a place built for long lunches, sailing, and watching the light shift across still water.

The social compass is Abu Tig Marina, where yachts line up along a promenade of bars and restaurants and the evening drifts comfortably from espresso to cocktails. Days belong to the water: Mangroovy Beach is a serious kitesurfing spot, its sky stitched with colour when the wind comes up, while Zeytuna Beach sits out on its own island for a calmer swim. Inland, El Gouna Golf Club rolls green and improbable through the dunes, and Kafr El Gouna — the Nubian-style downtown — gathers the prettiest squares, the boutiques and the late tables.

The eating is genuinely good here, which is rare on the Red Sea. Dinner might mean La Maison Bleue's refinement, a proper cut at TBÔNE Steakhouse, or the easy buzz of Bua Khao and Saigon for Thai and Vietnamese; Zia Amelia and Kahramana cover Italian and Egyptian with the same confidence. Afterwards the town stays up — Buddha-Bar Beach turns the sand into a lounge, and design hotels like Casa Cook El Gouna keep their own quietly stylish crowd by the pool long after the kitesurfers have come ashore.
