Port Safaga wears its working-port honesty like a badge — this is no manufactured resort strip but a real Red Sea town where phosphate freighters share the water with windsurfers and dive boats. The pace is slow, the crowds thin, and the appeal unhurried. People have come here for generations not for nightlife but for the sands themselves: dark, mineral-rich grains that locals and visiting patients bury themselves in under the sun, a folk cure for psoriasis and stiff joints. Add some of the steadiest wind on the coast and a string of uncrowded offshore reefs, and Safaga reveals itself as a place for the purposeful traveller.

The reefs are the reason serious divers detour the 60-odd kilometres south from Hurghada. Panorama Reef earns its name with sheer walls and clouds of anthias dropping into the blue, while Tobia Arba — the Seven Pinnacles — scatters seven coral towers across a sandy lagoon ideal for snorkellers and photographers alike. Abu Kafan, a narrow ridge swept by current, rewards stronger swimmers with pelagic encounters. On land, the therapeutic black sand draws sun-cure visitors to the beaches around Menaville Resort, and the constant cross-shore breeze turns the bay into one of Egypt's premier windsurfing classrooms.

For a day away from the water, the eastern desert holds Mons Claudianus, a remote Roman quarry where emperors once cut the grey granite columns that still stand in Rome — abandoned barracks and a half-hewn pillar lie where the masons left them, reachable only by a long desert track. Back in town, evenings are gentle affairs: a plate of grilled fish at a harbourside café, the freighters lit up offshore, and a sky undimmed by resort glare. Safaga doesn't perform for visitors. It simply gets on with things, and lets you do the same.
