There is the Giza you have seen ten thousand times in photographs, and there is the Giza you feel when you actually stand on the plateau — the Great Pyramid of Khufu rising 139 metres from 2.3 million limestone blocks, so large it refuses to fit in a single frame. It is the only one of the seven ancient wonders still standing, and 4,500 years have done nothing to diminish the shock of scale. The Sphinx crouches below it, carved from a single outcrop, gazing east toward the sunrise as it has since the Old Kingdom.

What surprises first-timers is how close the city presses: the suburb of Giza runs right up to the archaeological fence, and the desert only truly opens out at the panorama point on the ridge to the southwest, where all three pyramids line up for the classic shot and the camels wait. Inside the complex, the relocated Khufu Solar Boat — a 43-metre cedar funerary vessel reassembled from over a thousand pieces — and the new Grand Egyptian Museum next door turn a half-day photo stop into a full day of genuine Egyptology.

The plateau also hides one of Egypt's great dining surprises. Khufu's, chef Mostafa Seif's elevated Egyptian table inside the complex, was named the best restaurant in the Middle East and North Africa for 2026 — and you eat it with the Great Pyramid an arm's length away. For the storied version, the 19th-century Mena House began life as a khedival hunting lodge and still frames Khufu from its garden rooms.
